Chapter Seventeen

Tia

Thanksgiving

Lenny Kravitz’s “American Woman” plays through the radio. Lifting the turkey from the oven, I sway my hips to the music. Today, I’m feeling extra chipper. It’s my first holiday with my Mama and baby girl in four years.

It’s extra special this year because Rocko will spend it with us. God, please let today go, okay.

Things have been going well with us. Thankfully Tommy has kept his mouth shut about the day he caught his brother fucking me against his desk. A day I would like to forget. Even though he won’t show it, I know it bothers Rocko to keep whatever we are a secret. I’m just not ready to let it be known. I want my daughter to be the first to know when I am ready. Well, I guess she will be the second.

Chelsea enters the kitchen looking beautiful in her summer dress with a side braid. I pull her in for a twirl. She tenses from my touch but quickly relaxes and does a slight spin for me. When the song ends, she stands there with her eyes narrowed at me. “Are you high?”

I’m a bit offended by the accusation. “Can’t I just be happy celebrating this day with my daughter?”

Chelsea crosses her arms defiantly. “And what exactly are we celebrating?”

“Our first holiday together since I’ve been back. Please tell me you plan to stay?” I’ve been gone for many years, so I’m uncertain who she typically spends holidays with, but I’m going to guess the Robinsons. Now that I’m back, I’m hoping that will change.

Something seems off about my daughter. Could it be my presence?

The doorbell rings. Chelsea strides to the door, and I follow a few steps behind. Tommy Robinson stands there with an apple pie in hand. His eyes roam down my daughter’s body in a way that makes me uncomfortable. His daughter Maddie is attached to his side.

“Are you going to let our guests in Chels or keep them waiting?” I ask.

“Ah, yeah, sorry,” Chelsea awkwardly replies. “Please come in.”

They enter the house with a smiling Rocko trailing behind them, instantly lighting up my face. I feel like a gitty schoolgirl around him. Funny, I never felt like that around him in high school. That was Syndey.

“Hey Chels, Happy Thanksgiving,” Rocko greets my daughter, and she eyes him strangely. He’s not one to talk very often. He’s probably only ever said a few words to her. He doesn’t smile often, so I’m not surprised to see her studying him.

Tommy and Maddie follow Chelsea to the kitchen table. I stay behind to greet Rocko properly. I go to turn, but when he sees his brother and niece out of view, he brings me in for a long, toe-curling kiss. His hands graze my thigh and start to inch up my skirt. I swat it away. “Behave.” I spit playfully. It’s so easy to get lost in each other. But that can’t happen.

Today is about family.

We enter the kitchen and take our places at the nicely set oak wood table.
